Spay and Neuter Q & A

ASK TOBY

Q: WHAT IS THE TOBY PROJECT?

A: The Toby Project is a non-profit free/low-cost mobile spay/neuter program started by veterinarian Dr. Andrew Kaplan to help control pet overpopulation in NYC. The inspiration for this program was Dr. Kaplan's dog, Toby, who he adopted from a shelter on the day he was scheduled to be put to sleep. Thankfully, his story had a happy ending, but for most other dogs and cats, the outcome is much more disturbing. By spaying and neutering dogs and cats before they have a chance to breed, this program will help reduce the large number of animals in the community that are brought to animal shelters, where they might be put to sleep.

Q: HOW CAN I OR OTHERS HELP?

A: The Mobile Spay/Neuter program is a free or low-cost service. However, if you would like to make a donation to help fund our efforts, you may do so on this website. All help is greatly appreciated.

Q: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SPAY/NEUTER MY PET ?

A: Spaying/neutering your pet prevents unwanted litters of puppies and kittens from ending up in shelters where they might be put to sleep. This surgical procedure also prevents testicular and breast cancers as well as uterus and prostate infections.

Q: WILL THERE BE PAIN AFTER THE SURGERY?

A: Yes, mild pain is associated with any surgery, therefore, your pet will go home with pain-reducing medication after the procedure.

Q: WHAT HEALTH CONDITION/LIMITATIONS WOULD PREVENT MY PET FROM BEING SPAYED/NEUTERED?

A: All patients must be at least 16 weeks and not older than 5 years old. They must weigh at least 4 pounds and not be overweight. Your pet MUST be in good health. Any illness whatsoever will make your pet a poor candidate for anesthesia and surgery.

Q: WHAT SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS DO I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE THE SURGERY?

A: On the night before the surgery, remove all food and water after midnight. As this free service is offered on a first-come-first-served basis, you should arrive at the assigned location at 7am.

Q: What DO I HAVE TO DO AFTER THE SURGERY IS OVER?

A: When you pick up your pet, you will be given post-surgical instructions and medication to reduce pain. If you have further questions or if there is an emergency, you may call the phone number that will be provided for you.

Q: IS IT TRUE THAT MY PET WILL GAIN WEIGHT AS A RESULT OF SPAYING/NEUTERING?

A: No, it is not true. Animals gain weight due to lack of exercise, poor diet, and/or specific medical issues.
